THIS FUCKING COUNTRY

did you guys hear about josh howard? he's the starting small forward on the dallas mavericks of the NBA. there was a youtube video posted last week where he said, "star spangled banner going on right now. i don't even celebrate that shit. i'm black." then he says something about obama that no one seems to be able to make out. read about it and see the video here.

for those who don't know, the owner of the dallas mavericks, internet and media billionaire mark cuban, has long treated the basketball team as his own personal bro-magnet, and he uses his ownership of the team to engage directly with its fans. he personally accepts emails from mavs fans and was the first professional sports team owner to have a blog (apparently, they all do now). unlike the rest, cuban actually goes pretty far to make his role in running the team transparent, and actually seems to listen to the advice that he solicits from the fans.

so anyway, after this josh howard thing blew up, all sorts of racists have been emailing cuban. you can imagine what a lot of white people in this country (USA, i mean) might have to say about a young african-american man who makes $10 million a year to play basketball. hell, you can read the myriad disgusting comments posted in response to the original youtube clip. but mark cuban has saved you the trouble by posting all of those awful emails he received, with the senders' name, email address, and IP address (when available), on his blog. there are varying degrees of awfulness here, but they give you a sense of why the upcoming election is looking like it'll be a lot closer than the smug liberal media thought it would. the things a lot of these guys say about obama... not even counting policy or ideological considerations, how much of the country does obama not even have a chance with based solely on the colour of his skin? one hopes that these idiots don't vote, but if they'll go out of their way to write angry emails to the owner of a basketball team who can't even be reasonably expected to personally read through much of his daily deluge of unsolicited emails, something tells me a lot of them will also get out to cast a ballot.

anyway, you can read cuban's blog post here. i didn't have the stomach to read through more than a tenth of them. i stopped after this one:
Ya might tell Howard the next time you talk to him, that if not for America, he’d probably be be throwing spears in Africa someplace instead of free-throws.

Semper Fi,
M.E. Heffernan
i mean, maybe i'm just naïve, but that's really shocking, isn't it?

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

in addition to having my own search string on amazon and being quoted (twice) in a wikipedia article, as of this morning, the mp3 blog of which i am a contributor was linked on pitchfork. oh, what a dizzying year of growing semi-legitimacy it has been.

i also like how pitchfork drops patrik's name, as if people are supposed to know who he is. what a complete success he has become.
